Education Committee (EdComm)
3 June 2003
Mid-Year Report
Current Charge
Under review
by the VRA Board.
Accomplishments
An extensive discussion facilitated and summarized by Carolyn Lucarelli provided
feedback to the Board about the VRA Strategic Plan.
Tightly packed committee meeting in Houston, including discussions of: our website and how to expand it, possible workshops for us to sponsor in Portland, how to make the awarding of workshop stipends to chapters go more smoothly, connections between our committee and the regional chapters, promoting collaborations with related organizations (representatives of MCN and SAA were present), and the Summer Institute.
Leah Theis produced an excellent resources page that is linked from the EdComm web site: http://www.aapvrf.cornell.edu/education/Links.htm.
Betha Whitlow led a lively
discussion on the EdComm email list about workshops the committee would sponsor
for the Portland conference. In the end, two workshops were chosen. One is being
organized and presented by John Taormina, with the title of "VR Fundamentals:
Introduction to the Digital Format for VR Collections." The second workshop
is titled "Job Status." It is being organized by Betha Whitlow and
will be taught by Margaret Webster and Mary Ann Wersch, a human resources professional
from Reed College in Portland.
Goals
The co-chairs of the
EdComm will join the ARLIS/NA-VRA Joint Taskforce on Education to improve communication
between the two groups.
Recruit another committee member to take the spot vacated by Margo Ballantyne, who is now liaison to the EdComm from the VRA Board. This new committee member will become the liaison to the Pacific Rim Chapter.
Better define the role that EdComm members will play as liaisons to the chapters.
Assign EdComm members to monitor VRA-L and ARLIS-L for educational opportunities. Others may be assigned to check education web pages for related organizations. These will be added to the EdComm's web resources page.
Work to better define "selling" the chapters on the idea of sending an officer or a member to a workshop for free.
Talk with Astrid Otey and Eric Schwab about creating an Education link on the VRA home page. This would link to an Education "welcome" page that directs people to the EdComm web site and especially points out the feedback form and the resources page.
Follow up on educational
contacts recently made with other organizations.
